About the Book
Borisoglebsk, Dinaburg, Dvinsk. This city had a variety of names since 1275 and now is known as Daugavpils. It is located in the South East of Latvia, on the banks of Daugava river, from which the city gets its name. Since Latvia joined the European Union much of its commercial, industrial and transport potential has been lost, resulting in high levels of unemployment.
Many people, including myself, have grown up in Daugavpils, but left it in search for a better life overseas and have not looked back. The entire city remained to them as a distant childhood memory. Each time, when returning to Daugavpils I realize that it has became a strange place for me. Every street, every alley, tram and building seems very familiar, but the silence of streets and a suspicious glance of passersby makes me step back and understand just how much my hometown has changed since I left it.
