Over the course of the past year I have been making photographs of the Swamp Youth Collective House. Kyle, Chris, Ray and Aaron all live in the house. Kyle is my brother and Chris is my cousin.. Swamp Youth Collective is a do-it-yourself music and art community comprised of mostly musicians from the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. There is no money involvedit is more of a conscious effort of endless support for each other and the concept of shared lives. The collective thrives by creating a supportive community, intellectually musically, or intuitively. They live in a world disconnected from the mainstream music and culture. Their house, affectionately named the Swamp House, is located a rural section of West Atco, New Jersey. I have spent an extensive amount of time there expressing my thoughts and ideas of art, music, and theory while making photographs. The photographs in this portfolio are a natural outgrowth of that experience. The members of the collective are not concerned with the future as much as the present and employment is not a priority. The house feels like a sanctuary, or a pause from reality, stress, and anxiety. Their main goal is to create and express themselves, whether that comes through music, a pen, or a camera. These photographs are an exploration into their lives and the broader concept of alternative lifestyles that people might chose. Succeeding financially is not important to them; they are more interested in sharing ideas for better ways to live, create, and survive.
