I Need My Time to Dream is a collection of poetry written at a time of great growth and maturity in the life of Melanie Harvell Sanders, who grew up as a poor white during the time when government assistance was almost unheard of. Melanie was the middle girl of six children, three older brothers, one older sister, and one younger sister. These poems reflect life growing up in this family, and life after marriage and after having two children of her own. Some of the poems are about her personal emotions in dealing with life; other poems are her takes on the actions of others. Most were written between the years 1980 and 1995. This book of poetry was published mainly for her family and a few close friends, as a remembrance and as an insight into her private thoughts and feelings. It contains 80 pages of poems and full page illustrations.
