After close to 40 years of tinkering with the camera, I think I am finally starting to get it. A perfect example would be the Botanical series represented in this book. While I have been creating photographs at the Missouri Botanical Gardens since my twenties, it took me years to avoid being overpowered by the lush green tropical plants and see that these same plants can be transformed to their simplest and expressive abstract form - black and white defined by highlights and shadows. I’ve used this simple approach throughout this book. The essence of these images is defined by simple, clean black and white interpretations. Today, I continue to look through the camera with an eye toward discovery. It is this discovery that I hope translates to you through the photographs in this book.
I started the journey into nature when I attended an Outward Bound month-long wilderness program at 16. Not only did I learn to deal with the internal struggles of youth, I also learned to respect and appreciate the power and beauty of nature. For nearly 40 years now, Jack’s passion for photography has been focused on his love for the landscape and our natural environment. Searching for the “Lure of Light” has taken Jack to many remote and unique places as well as enhanced his ability to develop “the art of seeing” through both Grande landscape and detailed still life. Jack currently serves as principal of Jack Curran Photography located in St. Louis, Missouri as well as Senior Vice President of GROUP360 Worldwide, a creative services and marketing communications firm. Jack’s fine art prints are currently held in many private and corporate collections, and he continues to be exhibited in select art galleries and museums.
