About the Book
About the Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition In 2012 the Center for Metal Arts partnered with Charles Lewton-Brain to launch the inaugural Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition, to recognize the experimental work being done using the techniques of foldforming across art disciplines, and to create a benchmark survey of how this innovative sheet-forming technique has evolved in thirty years since Lewton-Brain first investigated it in a New Paltz grad school studio. The hundreds of entries from three continents suggested that jewelers who construct with foldforming techniques are moving into more sophisticated and less obvious uses of the folded forms, and demonstrated that this technique is now being explored in related disciplines of sculpture and functional objets d’art with astonishing results. These pages celebrate the winners and Jurors’ Choice selections recognized in competition years 2012 and 2013. Hazel Wheaton, editor of Art Jewelry magazine and member of the 2013 jury, lends her insight and commentary to the collection as denoted by initials HW. The annual Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition continues to be a survey of the evolution of foldforming as it is applied in large and small-scale works, in jewelry, sculpture, architecture, functional objects, and unexpected applications. Winners are announced each year during the annual Lewton-Brain foldforming intensive at the Center for Metal Arts in downstate New York. As host of the annual event, the Center for Metal Arts also maintains public resources about foldforming and the competition, including links, images, videos, learning resources, and competition entry information at www.centerformetalarts.com.
