India in a Mind's Eye is a deeply engaging, beautifully articulated account of a journey through India by a foreigner familiar with the terrain. As a longtime practitioner of Bhakti-yoga and student of Indian culture, the author had rare access to people, places, scenes and situations unavailable to the casual traveler, and describes it all with a clear eye, a philosophic turn of mind and a healthy sense of the surreal.
Here we meet pontificating professors and ghoulish beggars, raucous street festivals and insect infestations in cut-rate hotel rooms, unscrupulous Christian missionaries and temperamental gurus, epic traffic hells and Indian weddings, an erstwhile Maharani and a public masturbator, mad saints and beautiful Bharatanatyam dancers, young westerners in hot pursuit of enlightenment and a famous guru leaving his mortal frame.
More than a kaleidoscopic view of the strange and the sublime, the author provides rare insight into the heart and soul of a land that has intrigued, confounded and transformed generations of travelers and seekers alike.
"A thoughtful and sophisticated journey through spiritual India, as well as through [the author's] interior mindscape."
Malcolm David Eckel, Director of Religious Studies, Boston University.

I began photographing in 1994, following many years as a Hindu monk, writer, and academic scholar. With no background in the visual arts, photography appeared serendipitously and soon absorbed my full attention. For me, the essence of photography is found in the pure pleasure of seeing: the experience of opening a more patient, contemplative, intuitive, imaginative eye to the world. It’s about surrendering to the strange synergy between quiet receptivity and probing curiosity -- appreciating the “suchness” of things, while experiencing their complex resonances within personal consciousness. Moving about the world with a camera opens my eyes and mind to the beauty, strangeness, and mystery of it all, while crafting images in the darkroom provides a means for communicating my wonder and delight. My work can be found in many private collections. Most images in my books are available as original photographic (silver-gelatin) prints. Feel free to contact me via my website.
