Illustrated by over 500 photos taken by the author and members of his family, this book is a photo tour of the period from roughly 1000 to 1500, This period, generally known as the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance, saw Europe recover from the Dark Ages. Trade and economic activity increased, town life was revived, and the first universities in Europe were established. The great art works and architecture of the Renaissance were created and the nation-state began to emerge. Conflicts between Christian and Islamic powers were common and the Eastern Roman empire (Byzantine) finally fell to the Ottomans, while Christian forces completed the reconquest of Spain. In many ways, this fascinating period created the world we now live in.
I worked for 30 years as a defense consultant and military historian before taking early retirement and becoming a high school history and ESOL teacher. I started traveling to historic sites with my parents and I've been taking photos of my travels since I was 8 years old. I've been a part-time freelance photographer (mainly sports) for 10 years and have coached soccer teams for 20 years.
