About the Book
The monuments in Washington DC are open free of charge to the public. There is no waiting line to get in, and you are asked to not bring food with you. The Lincoln Memorial is probably one of the most visited places in the city. It attracts people from around the world as well as local politicians trying to find inspiration. The monument itself has taken a life of its own. This is a place where surprising things can happen, where ephemeral juxtapositions of unlikely people take place, in complement or in opposition of each other. Some visitors come to see the architecture or to see the Washington Monument reflecting in the pool. Others come for its symbolism, to remember Martin Luther King’s speech or simply to be in awe in front of the statue. It is a pilgrimage destination for family reunions. I went to the Lincoln Memorial several times a week during the summer of 2014. I met a number of people and their families who have enriched my life. They came from West Virginia, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Diego, Saskatoon, Glasgow, Paris, Egypt, Moldova, China. One day I met a group of deaf people and a few days later a sign language teacher. The president of a camera historical society walked on the same marble floor as a history buff and his eight year old grandson who can recite, in any order you want, the names of all the US presidents, their dates and the names of their respective wives. The tourists of the Lincoln Memorial are not just tourists, they are people, too. They have a story. It is worth telling. This photography essay is my attempt at it. For this project, I put aside all my high-end digital camera equipment and went back to film. All the pictures in this book were taken on Kodak Tri-X film with a pair of Rolleiflex cameras: a 2.8F and a 2.8FX. One is new, the other is about my age.
