About the Book
What a great adventure on which we embark. Who rides a bicycle across this state anyway? What level of insanity must one possess to undertake such a feat? 40mph headwinds. Crosswinds that could turn riders on their head, quicker than you can downshift. Semi trucks pulling trailers full of cattle, barreling past you as you tuck in and hope to whoever that you don’t get sucked under. They say nothing worth doing comes without risk, but the wise ones who say this never say what amount of risk is enough. That is up for the rider to decide. Would you ride a metal object through a thunderstorm while being, by a good percentage, the tallest object in the area? Is that enough risk? Would you be willing to ride for shelter in the not so unlikely event you need to escape a tornado? If you said yes to any of these, then there is a pretty decent possibility that you have been on the Bike Across Kansas.
It's a classic love/hate relationship. I hated the headwind today because it slowed me down, tired me out, and was as loud as a jet engine. I loved the headwind because it blew the stench of the feedlots away from my nose.
This book is dedicated to those who have ridden this great state from end to end. To those who have endured days of thundering, down-pouring, punishment. All for the payoff of the magic that this weird, flyover state contains. As well as a chance to say “I rode a bicycle over 500 Miles in a week, with 1000 of my best friends.”
When someone finds out that you’ve ridden a bicycle across an entire state, their first reaction will usually be astonishment, followed by the statement “I could never do that.” The people in this book come from all walks of life and come in all shapes and sizes. They did it, and so can you. So grab your bike. We’ll see you at the border.
