About the Book
The collection of photographs in this publication has been assembled as a celebration of the city of Birmingham’s nocturnal light, colour and vibrancy. Night-time in a city can possess a particularly compelling ambience. Each city is different and Birmingham maintains its own special aura. It is a diverse and culturally significant city, rich in history, famous for its people, industry, commerce, invention, canals, buildings and its dynamic, forward-looking perspective. Birmingham folk – Brummies – are often considered among the friendliest people in Britain. They are extremely proud of their city, its heritage and its bold direction. Under the shadowy veil of night, Birmingham shines out from the darkness like a beacon, its architecture, becoming bathed in both light and dark, transforms, to accentuate shape and form. These photographs attempt to eloquently convey the distinct character which envelops the city when night’s inky fingers move in to caress her buildings and public spaces. They also reveal a small number of cultural venues dotted around the city, indicative of the rich diversity of Birmingham’s people.
Birmingham is Britain’s second largest city, often referred to as the second city, but it is by no means second best; the city maintains a comprehensive worldview and actively participates in promoting Great Britain and modern British values to a global audience. It is a burgeoning city and a magnetic centre, one which aims to attract interesting people and businesses to contribute to its future growth.
This imagery was captured over a three year period in the life of an advancing city, 2007 – 2010. Looking back at that period, it becomes evident that some of the scenery has already changed as Birmingham seeks to forge ahead and build upon solid foundations to further benefit the lives of its people.
In sharing this series of photographs, my wish is that they may be of interest to others who also feel a connection to this fascinating city.
