What does one need to create a series of group portraits? Not much. Three chairs, the shady side of an old, one-room schoolhouse, a camera, and of course, friends to photograph.

This is an annual gathering of family and friends from throughout Amador and Calaveras Counties and the Mother Lode at the annual Chestnut Roast at the historic Milligan Schoolhouse in California’s Mother Lode.

Dozens of friends and family members showed up to enjoy freshly-roasted chestnuts, meat, homemade wine, and friendship at the annual event. One is invited to the Chestnut Roast but once and must find his own way back the next year.

There was only two requirements for the photos. Sit still and each group had to have at least one different person.

Using the wedding-gift dinette chairs given to Robin Cueno-Dell'Orto by her groom, Stan, many years ago, Jackson photographer Larry Angier created more than 60 group portraits to document this slice of Americana on November 28, 2008.
