About the Book
A small, but faithful, group of women worked behind the scenes at Wellesley Congregational Church in Wellesley, MA, on a project to produce the colorful liturgical hangings that now grace our once bare walls. We made more than 60 pieces, one set of 11 hangings for each season of the church year. At the suggestion of my friend, Marsha Wilcox, we also published a beautiful picture book about the project, a collaboration of Marsha’s fantastic photography and my story of designing, constructing, and installing the hangings.
This book also relates how we challenged our abilities, stretched our creativity, and renewed our faith as we brought the project, piece-by-piece to completion. But completion was hard to define. When we published the first edition of the book, we thought that the book was finished and that the hanging project needed a few more stitches and would soon be finished as well. When we thought we had just about finished, I realized that we had never made the chancel banners for the Christmas season, leaving the sanctuary painfully bare during a very festive season. It seemed easy enough to take care of; the basic design was established and we just needed to make it larger, much larger. But this was not going to be so easy. The Parkinson’s disease I had been working around for almost 20 years finally was winning, making it impossible for me to produce the same quality of work, particularly on banners of this scale.
Enter my good friend, Marilyn Bishop. She offered to help and finally took over the sewing, making it possible to complete the Christmas banners.
This second edition of our book includes new photographs of the completed Christmas banners. We hope this book encourages you to appreciate the place of liturgical art in worship.
