About the Book
My own investigations of nature through photography try to capture that fleeting, hard-to-define quality - the essence of a place. The idea for the book came from a visit to Dumfries and Galloway and seeing some very striking trees by the roadside near Moffat.
Nearby, I also discovered Lochwood Oaks, a remote stand of ancient oak trees, some over 400 years old. While visiting Logan House Garden, I became fascinated with the different settings for the trees I had seen - in a created garden, by the roadside and in an ancient woodland.
A tree records information about its environment while it grows and nowhere is this felt more strongly than at Lochwood Oaks. They are a living link with history. Explore their branches and they tell us the stories of our past.

About the Creator
I studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, completing a four year degree course in Fine Art in the department of Drawing and Painting in 1986. During the foundation year at Art College I was introduced to 35mm film photography and given the opportunity to learn developing and printing techniques. I really enjoyed these classes and was lucky enough to be taught by Joseph McKenzie, regarded by many as the ‘Father of Modern Scottish Photography’. I have continued to be interested in photography ever since - and now enjoy exploring the creativity possible using digital techniques. I am particularly interested in infrared photography and have recently been accepted as a member of the League of Creative Infrared Photographers. Photography has renewed my wonder in the detail found in nature - it always challenges my preconceptions and constantly surprises you with its beauty.
