About the Author

David Willis
aesirwillis London, England
David Willis' recent body of work examines how the language of commercial advertising and celebrity culture dominates our contemporary imagery. Willis constructs his own marketing slogans and utilises elements of graphic design in his painting’s compositions, which are populated by incongruous creatures of humour and intrigue. His handling of violent expression, contorted figures and oblique text creates divergent meanings through their union. The use of sex in mass media promotion, film posters and image consumption all give definition to Willis’ painterly hand; utilising the same pictorial marketing techniques to parody and isolate the power of this capitalist dictated imagery. Willis’ art refers to the tradition of still life; the omnipresence of death shadowing the existence of the sublime notion of celebrity. The latent sexual language in his painting acknowledges the continuing dominance of the male viewer in art. Visit my website for full statement and artwork images

This is Rabbitness, is a curious and interesting concern into the notion of prime animal instincts. It is well portrayed in the manner the essay is supported by the body of work that is on display.
The work Willis is creating, on the basis of ritualistic mannerisms and alluding to primitive cultures, is both psychoanalytical and phenomenological. In both these cases it is perfectly contemporary, and the text perfectly explains how.
For anyone interested in Paint and Performance, in the Vienna Actionist tradition then this book is a must.

David Willis’s Debut book, ‘This is Rabbitness’’ is an excellent introduction to the unnerving yet absorbing Rabbit-Creatures’ that make up the content of his exciting current body of work.

Willis’s technical prowess as an image maker is supported by a deep understanding of his concept resulting in a collection of highly successful large scale contemporary paintings, intelligently displayed as the climax of this interesting book.

A book well worth reading if you’re interested in the contemporary arts today.
