“The paintings in this catalog are in many ways
influenced by the flat colors and text balloons of
comic books. abstractly the paint has a feeling of being peeled back from the inside out and split down the middle like you might attempt separating a piece of paper through to the center of its core. i exaggerate the effect, creating paintings, in which composition overtakes the imagery. the final cartoonesque lines, outlined in black, gives form to the imagery. the gestural strokes appear as if from a quill pen dipped in black ink, slashing across the page of a psychedelic comic sheet.”

Mark Erickson was born in Hollywood, California
and as a boy wanted to play Major League baseball or be the guy hanging on the back of a garbage truck.
When fate turned the other way for the Los Angeles Sanitation Department and the San Francisco Giants did not call, he followed his family's tradition and began studying painting and graphic design. He studied at the San FranciscoArt Institute and the SF Art Academy, where he received his degrees in painting and graphic arts. Mark makes his living as a painter and works regularly in his studios in Oakland and Venice, California. He exhibits in galleries across the United States and Europe.
Mark recently completed a book with collaborator Katy Zartl, “The Book of Titles - Splashed Against a Black Wall,” a book of poetry, polaroids and paintings.
