Contains photographic images portray what has made the City of Edinburgh a World Heritage Site. These colour images concentrate mainly on the Old Town of Edinburgh along the Royal Mile, which is known as the spine of the town hence the name of the book.

The photographs focus on the main architectural buildings along with cityscape views and close up details. Along with these images are explanations that define their significance in helping Edinburgh become acknowledged as a World Heritage Site in 1995. All of the images feature are Grade A or B Listed Buildings and Listed Monuments.
