About the Book
OZARKS is an update of Roger Minick’s famous photo book, HILLS of HOME, which was published in the early 1970s. An homage to Minick’s childhood in the Ozarks of Arkansas, this current incarnation of that book includes, in addition to most of the original images, many images that have never been seen before.
Remembering what it was like beginning the Ozark project, Minick writes in the book’s foreword:
“While it was impossible to undertake the Ozark project without certain preconceptions, based on my childhood memories, I soon realized that there were aspects of the region that I had not fully understood as a child living there. Foremost was the realization that, while the landscape was beautiful, most of the people I was encountering in the small towns and backwoods were living a hard-scrabble existence. I was learning that many people over the years had tried farming, but because the land was so hilly and rocky, not good for large scale farming, most had long ago given up and left. It was also true that, other than a few full-time county jobs and sporadic employment at sawmills or canneries or chicken and dairy farms, the region offered little opportunity for sustainable employment. For those who stayed, they stayed because it was all they knew, and as a consequence, because they were God-fearing survivors, they were a uniquely tough, proud and stubborn people...”
