About the Book
During the Demystifying Disease Project, we learned about various diseases that impact society. Before we dove into this project, we completed a Cholera Case Study where we took a deeper look into cholera and how it has affected, and continues to affect, society. This was a sort of “mock-up” of what we would be doing for the duration of the project. We were then assigned groups based off of what disease we wanted to research. From there, we began to conduct our own research, watching films and reading books related to our disease. This helped us to get a more in-depth understanding of the disease. After completing our research, we compiled it all into an infographic with visuals and blurbs explaining our disease. For biology, we also completed various dissections (sheep heart, cow eye, sheep brain) and labs in order to better understand anatomy. To further our understanding of our diseases, we conducted interviews with people directly impacted by our diseases. This could be anyone from a fundraiser, researcher, patient, or family member that has had some experience with the disease. In our groups, we combined various quotes from our interviews to form a disease compilation page that explains the “story of our disease.” Finally, using our transcriptions of our interviews and research, we each created our own literary journalism articles that describes the disease from the perspective of the person we interviewed. This magazine is a compilation of all of our work.
