About the Book
This book depicts a series of colourful Chinese batiks and gouaches, made for an exhibition in Palestine. The paintings are based on press cuttings and personal holiday pictures. This is the way in which we conceive the world abroad. Both kind of pictures arouse emotions, by means of memory, recognition or empathy. We can be hurt by the sorrow of others, but what can we do? These cheerfully coloured paintings merely try to let people in more or less sorrowful countries/conditions know that they are not forgotten, at the same time trying to get the 'lucky ones' involved.
I studied drawing and textile art in Amsterdam. I was encouraged to be creative from childhood on and loved it always. To experiment with paint and other media, learning how techniques could help me to make beautiful paintings that earned me some admiration on the side, wasn’t bad at all. I have made representative as well as formal paintings. For me a painting is finished when it catches and keeps holding my attention. When I can keep looking at it while discovering new things. And not in the least: It has to be cheerful.
