"My Darwin 200 year has taken me around the world. I explored the high Andes in search of potatoes, combined my experiences of painting birds with the ballet in France and helped to inspire nearly 200 children to paint their own Darwin paintings. I have also had the most marvelous experiences on my days at the Zoo in Newquay with my easel covered in lemurs and my toes nibbled by meerkats !" John Dyer 2009.

Chapters included in the book:

Introductions
Paintings from the Zoo
Paintings from the High Andes of Peru
Jewel Ballet Paintings
The Darwin 200 BIG Art Exhibition
Chronology

British Artist John Dyer has been working as Artist in Residence for Darwin 200 in the South West of England. This book brings together all the paintings from the residency and the stories and photographs associated with them.

The work of nearly 200 children is also included in the book, the results of one of the largest children's art exhibitions organised in the UK.

"A successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund has led the Falmouth Art Gallery to receive an award of £50,000 to undertake a year long project to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.

Part of the award has been used to fund John Dyer to be the resident artist for Darwin 200 working with Newquay Zoo. The John Dyer Gallery is delighted to be working with Falmouth Art Gallery on this exciting project."

The front cover picture of this book shows the Beagle entering Falmouth Harbour (again) past Pendennis Castle and it is everything I'd hoped for when involved in setting up the Darwin 200 partnership with Falmouth Art Gallery and hearing that John Dyer was 'on board' for the journey. John has literally painted the picture that was in my head!
A plaque now marks the spot where Charles Darwin landed in Falmouth and this book is another permanent record of this year's biecentenary celebrations. It was a wonderful experience working with John Dyer at Newquay Zoo, sharing part of our conservation work and seeing his vision of what we do here. This book and residency for Darwin 200 year part of a long tradition which started with artists being taken along on 'Voyages of Discovery' and exploration as well as painters like Edward Lear recording the early days of zoos such as London Zoo and the Knowsley menagerie in Darwin's lifetime.
Thanks John, we look forward to working with you again, and to everyone else, buy this book! It'll cheer you up and captures the liveliness of the animals and the zoo that cares for them.

We have both hard back and soft back versions of this book in the gallery and the design, production and colour is excellent in both. The hard back book in particular is very impressive and good value for money. It is a fantastic collectors item and would make a great gift for anyone interested in Cornish Art / Darwin / Zoo / Peru and the paintings of John Dyer. Both of the books are printed using thick silk white paper which allows the paintings to be reproduced in very high quality and with exceptional colour reproduction.
