About the Book
These photographs were taken in the abandoned Lotus shoe factory in Banbridge, Northern Ireland.
Shoes were made on these premises for Lotus, Marks and Spencer, Fii, and Frank Wright, over a period of fifty years. At its height the factory employed 600 workers making it one of the largest employers in the area.
The last of the workers left in 2002 when it was decided it was no longer possible to produce footwear competitively in Northern Ireland.
Demolition work had already begun by the time I was invited to document the building giving a distinctly eerie feeling to many of my photos.
The site will soon have 190 houses and apartments on it, although plans are in place to keep the front facade of the building as part of the new structure.
