Mark Steines’ life changed forever when he landed on African soil in Sierra Leone. He traveled with a group of doctors, nurses and volunteers through Lighthouse Medical Missions to photograph the needs of the people there and the hope this team provided. They saw unbelievable poverty, heartbreaking sickness, and desperation. They also, however, saw inexplicable joy and sincere gratitude. In just over a week in Sierra Leone, Mark took nearly 10,000 pictures - capturing not only the team’s journey, but the spirit of a nation. Some of the most telling images are in the pages of this book.

About the Author

Lighthouse Medical Missions
lighthousemm Santa Monica, CA

In 1998 the first Lighthouse team went to The Gambia, Western Africa. The needs of the people were clear immediately, but their warmth and appreciation were evident as well. This made an impact on our hearts and our relationships with the African people has kept us coming back.

Since then, Lighthouse Medical Missions, working with the Door Christian Fellowship in Africa, has organized medical missions to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burundi, The Democratic Republic of the Congo and The Gambia. We have also built churches, schools, constructed water projects and dug wells.

It has been an amazing journey; people coming together from around the world to serve others in need. I have been able to witness this all first-hand and my hope is the work of Lighthouse Medical Missions will continue to grow and that we will achieve an even greater impact on a world in need.

Thank you for these beautiful images of such a wonderful people. I lived in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone from Sept 1970 to July 1973. The country was so lush and alive and beautiful. I lived in a cement block house on the Centennial School compound.
In April 1971 a republican constitution was adopted under which Saika Stevens became President. My second child, Erika, was born in the mission hospital in Mattru Jong. We lived through several coups during this time, but we ourselves were never threatened. All the walks and hikes and wonderful people and friends we made are still so much a part of my life. It was heartbreaking to see and hear of all the horrible things that war brought to this beautiful country and her people.
After all these years, one of my most treasured times was standing under the big Cotton Tree in Freetown, where a group of former African American slaves, settled the site of modern Freetown.
Thank you again for this book. jan

As a semi-frequent traveller to Africa, and as a journalist by trade, I found much in this book to admire. The irony is that subject matter like this is increasingly rare to find professionally, out of some spurious idea that there's "no market" for it. There's always a market for unusual, profound images.
One minor nitpick. Forgive me for seeming pedantic and unnecessarily anal, but I think it should be "Photographer's Foreword," as in fore (beginning) word, not "Photographer's Forward." A minor fix, that makes the already great perfect. But then, I may be wrong.
Either way, a wonderful, and inspirational book. West Africa is not all about war, famine and pestilence.

You did such a wonderful job on this book! The photos are engaging, the text clear, but more than anything the experience that you had shines through. Thank you for taking the time to shoot the photos and prepare this testimony to Sierra Leone.
