This tells the story of the first cases of a private detective from the West Country of England. Richard Private is a clumsy but fortunate investigator who is new to the detecting business.

His cases range from the first case, a lost cat through a sheep rustling case to murder in Cornwall in the last case described. He is supported by Anthea and her uncle, Sir Henry Heatherington-Smythe Bt.
