The Lutheran hymn tradition of the early 16th century helped to firmly establish the Protestant Reformation with its direct appeal to the emerging middle class and a new power base. This appeal can be attributed in no small part through congregational singing of hymns, many which have roots in both the secular tradition of Meistersingers and the liturgical chant of the Catholic Church.
