Muted Voices is the work of nine developmentally disabled Turkish youth, a project of A Face to Reframe.
Images are powerful. They can disturb and disrupt many to action. But too often these days, the subjects of these images are disempowered in the aggregate face of poverty. What if they were given the cameras, empowered to be the authors rather than the subjects of their social change?
Though the rate of disabilities in Turkey is rising, stigmatization continues to be a source of great shame, causing some parents to sequester their children indoors. Lack of services, trained teachers, and public awareness are problems that need to be addressed.
Muted Voices is one step toward advocating for the worth and beauty of all Turkish citizens.

Beth, this is powerful. What an incredible book. I'm so proud of you! I got teary eyed looking at the pictures and thinking about the kids in Turkey who took them. I wanted to read every word of the book but couldn't see the small text in the preview...will you PLEASE bring it with you to Florida (yes, we're coming!). I'm so excited to see what happens next with a face to reframe. I can't wait to read the next book!
