I used InDesign for this one, but I often use BookSmart. I'm a graphic designer, and use InDesign all day, so I'm very comfortable with it, and it's nice to have full control over the layout.
Best of luck with your first book! It's addictive! I think I'm up to about 30 now!

Great example. I really liked the layout, as well as how you setup the chapter sections with the images overlayed with the text. Did you use BookSmart or did you do your own custom layout for the pages using PDF to Book ??
P.S. I'm also an Ottawa native, never used Blurb previously and I'm about to publish my first book shortly :-) Ironically, we were in Southern Italy in Naples, Sorrento, Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, etc...in June 2009 on a med cruise.
