About the Book
In December of 2007, I went to Africa with my brother Adam. We took a day trip out to see the Great Rift Valley and the natural African landscape, but this wasn’t the Africa I traveled 12,000 miles to see. We went to the Mathare Valley slums in Nairobi, Kenya to make a documentary. We had a very tight budget, a very short stay, very big goals, and even bigger logistical issues–but we did it.
Mathare is a very interesting place, and visiting Mathare as a privileged white American was a truly unique and eye-opening experience. We shot hours of footage, interviewed dozens of Mathare residents, and shot over 1500 photographs in the 10 days we were in there. Words can’t describe what we experienced, a traditional documentary couldn’t either, and photographs alone also prove that the task is difficult.
Visit the website at www.WelcomeToMathare.com and read about the wonderful people living in this harsh community. Buy the DVD of our movie, Welcome to Mathare, and experience Mathare in a truly immersive way. Spread the word about the Living & Bleeding in the world that Westerners aren’t aware of. Proceeds are donated to directly benefit and change the lives of the people living in the slum.
