The initial idea of making this photo book was for my individual study class project, which focuses on discovering and capturing the COLOR in Los Angeles. As I keep working on it, I find that this book may be more about my personal memories of Los Angeles.
I am a foreign student from Hong Kong. I have been studying in Los Angeles for about five years. This is year is my last year to stay in this city. Honestly, I feel so excited to go back to my home country, however my girl friend, Leina, who just went back to her home country after stayed in Los Angeles for two years, told that I would miss Los Angeles so badly. During I am working on this project, I seem to realize that her words may be right. This increases my motivation on this project.
I think I should briefly explain the title of this book, ?COLOR ? LA.? Basically, it is wordplay. Firstly, ?LA? is the abbreviation of ?Los Angeles.? The ??? (the dot) is a special character, which could be typed by pressing "ALT" key and "8" key on MAC computer. Lastly, ?COLOR? is the leitmotif in this title, as well as in this book. It means not only the appearance of objects or light sources, but also the characteristic and the nature. There is a Chinese vocabulary, ???? ( ??? means ?Special? and ??? means ?Color? by translating word for word into English), which refers to ?the characteristic.? The ?COLOR? here incline to the latter meaning. Some people asked me why I didn?t title ?COLOR of LA.? I would say the dot could not be replaced by the word ?of? in this case because the ??? itself is a character; personally I think it could remind people the word ?characteristic.? Additionally, ?of? indicates ?belonging to something, being part of something, and relating to something.? However, I think both ?COLOR? and ?LA? are equivalently important subjects in this project, as well as in this book.
I divide these images into four categories: "The Natural COLOR," emphasizing the true looks of LA; "The Synthetic COLOR," signifying the marks of human activities in LA; "The Picture-in-Pictures," presenting the introspection of LA; and "The Memories," depicting the vivid moments in my memories of LA.
