Studio Foundations
Assignment 1: Line
Line compositions and experimentation
The introduction to this course, and art as a whole, deals with one of the fundamental building blocks of visual art, the line. The objective of this assignment is for students to create simple linear compositions that explore the uses of the illusion of movement and space while experimenting with the beauty of simple lines. Using pens, pencils, paints, and nearly any monochromatic two-dimensional medium, students create four different series of lines which build off of and re-interpret the first frame from a set. These sets are based on curvilinear lines, straight lines, angular lines, and composites of all three.

As the first assignment in Studio Foundations, this exercise introduces students to thinking creatively within an assignment and, more importantly, within an idea. Projects are presented on a gray mat-board with die-cut lettering for an overall professional presentation. This degree of professionalism is expected with every project in the course.
