About the Book
Mare Incognitum, the unknown sea, is an exploration in abstracting the ocean environment. The ocean has always been fascinating to me, it is both inspiring and intimidating. There always seems to be something under the surface, both literally and figuratively. There is a mystery in the primordial ooze that will continue to inspire me. I have attempted to remove or mute the characteristics that would lead to feelings of familiarity. The images convey a certain uneasiness, a feeling of isolation. The darkness creeps in, both subduing and emphasizing different aspects of the images. This is a world where what you see is not reality, it is both ethereal and moody. At night you are constantly and easily exposed to feelings of uneasiness or downright fear. But perhaps these same feelings can be achieved during the day if we just look at the world from a different perspective. Mare Incognitum is the ocean when viewed in this askew perspective. Darkness resides in everything; it is merely masked by the light. The shadows are as important as the light itself in this project. They create otherworldly shapes and accentuate the mysterious qualities of the environment.
