I was fortunate enough to serve on a medical disaster relief team to Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake of January 2010. When I wasn’t attending to patient responsibilities, I started collecting stories of the friends I had met: the translators, security personnel, housing staff, and even some patients. I used the same opening remarks: “Tell me what it (the earthquake) was like. Where were you? What did you feel?” The responses are printed here verbatim in their own Haitian English. Some are their own words; some are the words of their friends who translated. They all have suffered greatly. They all have such dignity. They all have great faith. These are the stories of my heroes...
