About the Book
Like any big city with a long and rich history, the most striking aspect of New York City to the visitor or new resident is the diversity of neighborhoods across the city. The quilt of neighborhoods makes an initial and durable impression. But as more and more years of living in New York accumulate, my sense of the city is less and less founded on the distinctiveness of its neighborhoods, though they remain a constant joy. My sense of the city comes instead from the texture, the colors, the ever changing mix of people and the rush of movement of the city -- New York experienced day to day, looking above, below and all around.
