About the Book
“I Remember You” covers the 23 years that I lived in England, from the time I was born in 1953 to the time I emigrated to the US in 1977. I grew up in Worthing, on the south coast of England, and I lived there until I was 13. Then I lived and worked in the Greater London area until I moved to the States. My mother died when I was almost eight, and it is her photographs that provide the bulk of the first part of this book. After her death the family photographs essentially end; there are a handful of sporadic images that show me in my teens and early twenties, but for the most part I have used scans of records, screen captures of movies, and downloads from the internet to fill in the blanks.
Lately, I’ve been experiencing Proustian flashbacks of the most fleeting, infuriatingly evasive kind. Usually they are invoked by a smell or even a glance, but music also serves to take me back instantly to a time and a place. The records reproduced here are souvenirs, talismans, and markers that span perhaps15 years of my life, from the time my step-mother Joy entered the scene to my US vacation in 1976. Somehow I have reclaimed the most important singles and albums from my youth, and if my house ever burned down I’m not sure which I would take first, the records or the photographs.
