About the Book
This book, archived from personal photographs and found materials, is concerned with collective identity and comments on the production of mass media and identity.
The original version of this book was begun by embedding images in hand-made paper. I went on to frame these leaves of embedded paper in published books - the book communicating a sense of domesticity through the construction, which is similar to a family photo album. Every leaf is embellished with found materials and finally ironed with candle wax, a votive expression between audience and object, allowing a sacred, personal and reflective reading.
This published edition of 'The First Christmas' changes the value structure of the perishable original by allowing consumer participation. With the clean-cut quality of print form the reader looses the immediacy of surface, yet gains the certainty of production.
