About the Book
"Bienvenido" is my record of visiting the poblacion Nueva Havana in Santiago Chile when I was working at the University there from 1972 to 1973. The photographs I took could not be published until recently because the people in them might have been recognized by the military and have incurred serious problems.
Even though I was a North American and Nueva Havana was an important experiment in a democratically elected government which declared itself "on the Road to Socialism" and the U.S. government did what it could to assure that it would fail, the photographs witness the hospitable way in which I was received as well as some of the accomplishments of the people who lived in Nueva Havana.
