North to Alaska

"North to Alaska: A Drive to the Edge of America" is a compilation of notes and photographs taken by Erin Lindsey Pycior on her drive from Oregon to Alaska in August 2007.

Between Into the Wild and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Hollywood has pretty much tapped out the rite-of-passage story. Luckily for us, Kansas City photographer Erin Pycior found inspiration for her post-grad sojourn from Oregon to Alaska in more time-tested sources: Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums and Homer's Ulysses. "I was looking for some sort of perspective," says Pycior, who has a bachelor's degree in photography from the City College of New York. "I did get it, but there wasn't a big lesson to be learned. It was more about meditation — being quiet and enjoying the moment." Amid old Army-base towns and the vast icy tundra, Pycior shot 20 rolls of medium-format film and kept diligent notes describing her detours. She compiled her impressions into a self-published book and a dozen 16-inch-by-16-inch prints that she'll unveil during a free reception from 6 to 7 tonight at the Brick (1727 McGee, 816-421-1634)...
