About the Book
“A sério?
Photographer of…? “Surf”, I say. It’s easier to explain and sounds like a dream job to those who love the beach and travel around the world in search for the perfect wave. “Really? And don’t you need an assistant?”, is the predictable follow up of this tête-à-tête.
Not being exactly a lie, to be called surf photographer is not accurate either.
Actually, it’s one of my jobs but I feel more like a photographer of the sea and its shapes - perfect or not - than of those who ride it on the top of their boards.
Even when I get the privilege to photograph a master of that art, a world champion for instance, I find myself making a serious effort to focus on the job – capture each of those perfect moves executed in harmony with the waves – and trying not to let my mind escape to other stories that take place in that infinity of water in uninterrupted movement. Sometimes, a microscopic wave that breaks near my feet, right in the tideline, is enough to distract my thoughts. If I photograph the sea, my distractions come from feeling in my body the pulse of the ocean, that can expresses itself in bumps made of glow and peculiar textures but also in sea monsters of magnificent shapes.
This book is the gathering of some of those distractions.
