About the Book
Lampshades, PJ’s, Washing Lines and Mis-spelt Signs is a MUST for Ex-Pat's, travellers and anyone with a sense of humour!. It's a picturelogue depicting some of the more bizarre examples of Shanghai life as seen through the eyes of a westerner whose humour has a sense of the absurd!
So why... "Lampshades, PJ's, Washing Lines & Mis-spelt signs?"
As a westerner, I was fortunate to live and work in Shanghai for a number of years.
During this time I experienced the unique and often mystifying lifestyle of the Chinese people. At the same time I was able to share these experiences with family and friends, who, in turn have shared their photographs with me in order to make this book possible.
Over our three years in China, there was much that amused me and even more that I failed to understand about the ancient eastern culture that is ever present in Shanghai.
During the intensely hot days and balmy summer evenings the Shanghainese take to the streets with a sense of fashion that appears quite unique. Lampshades become the headwear of choice and pyjamas the trend setting outer garment of the night (and day!). All this against a backdrop of eco-friendly outdoor washing lines and signs that leave us westerners mildly amused!
This picturelogue is an attempt to respectfully enjoy some of the more bizarre examples...
