About the Book
The philosophy of the contemporary travel writers with their emphasis and reliance upon in-depth prior research within specific geographical and thematic frameworks is adopted as a starting point for the project. This provides the overall structure for the journeys during which chance encounters and the experiences that flow from them self-perpetuate through subsequent reactions, actions, and decisions.
History, politics, culture, nature, and allegorical references to cinema, painting, and photography all collide within an examination of the human psyche. Transmigrations is not only a study of the notions of cause and effect but also an exploration of our reaction to unfamiliar locations and situations over an extended time period, and how these manifest themselves within our vision and understanding of what we see and experience.
The images may occasionally appear deceptively simplistic yet are sharply observational. Subtly political, playful and humorous, vibrantly colorful, physically overwhelming, they are transfixing and transformative and never anything less than gripping.
The photographs demand multiple readings to begin to understand their complex individual and collective meaning. The work is therefore also a celebration of the potential of the photo-book and the strength images can acquire within each other’s presence when carefully juxtaposed.
