About the Book
This photo essay in black and white takes a look at another way of life — off the grid and away from the rat race — in a place called Slab City. Squatters, madmen, prophets, and criminals set up their own community near the Salton Sea on the concrete slabs of the abandoned Camp Dunlap. They all have one thing in common — they’re all running away from something.

About the Creator
Heather Quinn
San Diego
Heather Quinn is a photographer and nonfiction writer living in St Paul. Focusing on documentary photography, their work deals primarily with responses to the natural and urban landscape of the Southwest, tensions between the fragile ecology of the desert and humanity's struggle to dominate the land, and the intersections of cultures on both sides of the border with Mexico. Heather shoots in both analog and digital formats but prefers the meditative, hands-on experience of black and white photography.
