“Earth Air Fire Water…the dream diaries of Rick McCawley” is the culmination of a 10-year spiritual journey that started with a simple class assignment in nearby woods to make photographs with a view camera. The trip awakened memories of exploring in my youth, and led to the realization that I was out of touch with my nature. Years of air-conditioned life in front of a computer has led many of us to question the complexity and sterility of our lives in this digital age.
For me, photography is like daydreaming. Only later do I recognize the meaning and motivation behind my images. The assignment in the woods turned into Earth. Photographing clouds in the evening hours reflects the innocence and freedom of childhood games. Fire became passion, and finally Water celebrates the primal force of the “sacred feminine."
