About the Book
Noir
The images in this book are inspired by movie stills from the film noir and neo-noir genres of the 1940s onwards.
I wanted to recreate the melodramatic mood by experimenting with lighting techniques using only four small Nikon flashlights fired remotely from my camera using radio-controlled triggers.
The photographs were taken over a six week period in and around the City of Aberdeen in Scotland with the help of a number of willing volunteers.
At the start of the project, my intention was to display the images in black and white as with the original 40s and 50s film-noir. However, after shooting a few of the 'scenes', I began to warm to the idea of leaving the photographs in their original colour, more in line with the later Neo-Noir films.
