Ovidiu Gordan’s photographs do not have an obvious, shrill subject matter and they are not descriptive either – they do not report spectacular, unusual events or situations. One could say that he can convincingly render the unseen particularities of everyday humdrum, without even touching the extravagant, the shocking, the picturesque or other lustrous theme. Without falling into Intimism, his photographs are intimate – they confess and unveil their maker’s temper, his features, his interests and his aspirations. By trying to catalog his work, from every angle his photographs appear to be imperfect; a type of imperfection that is essential for any artistic product unaltered by time, trend and space so that by seeing them, one feels the need to shout: they are perfect! One does not know why they are perfect, but feels their freshness, their sincerity, their lack of emphasis – the joy with which they were made. This joy travels from their creator to the viewer, fulfilling and enriching the latter’s universe – and most of all, assuring them that life is worth being discovered.
Next to these images, words seem unfortunate and, however polished they may be, they seem unconvincing, especially when one associates them with images that are free of competitive narratives, so typical of fast-paced, supercharged production. All in all, the viewer is invited to a symphony of colors, shapes, rhythms, sensations, tones, discrepancies, mild dynamics and an atmosphere that engulfs and balances all these elements into distinct compositions which could always be compared with work from any particular moment in art history. A world full of nuances, of dichotomies, where black overlaps with white without spoiling its brilliance, where melancholy does not become pathetic, and surprise does not shout out impatiently at the viewer. Moreover, if one mentions the author’s fine, elevated sense of humor, one could conclude that a complete world reveals itself, a world where any artistic affinity could find its place.
