About the Book
Bonnie and Shirley is a pair of graphic novels bound together in the tête-bêche format. The book contains two stories bound together, the twin stories of two young women who grew up in the same outlying San Francisco neighborhood a half century apart. You can begin with Bonnie’s story of growing up in the rural Portola District, falling in love with horses, performing as Lady Godiva and then---turn the book upside down---and you can begin the story of Shirley, born in Hawaii to immigrant parents from China, member of a family that makes its way to San Francisco. Here Shirley grows up in her mother’s dry cleaning business and becomes a community leader.
