This retrospective is a crowning acheivement to the artist / painter, Mildred Wernick Savarese. It contains pictures of some of the major works she produced throughout the twentieth century. Born in 1914, she, her brother Sydney (who was stricken with Multiple Sclerosis) and her mother, were desserted by her father when she was very young. Every day was a struggle except for the time she was allowed to paint. Raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, she developed an interest in art as a young girl. Some of her works illustrate her early life with her family. Mildred was a highly intelligent youing lady. At her high school graduation she was the salutarian. She went on to study art at Cooper Union and she developed quickly as a painter. As a young woman she mastered portraiture and still lifes and eventually it all came together. Mildred developed a style all her own. Her unique still life portraits come directly from her mind. For years she worked as an assistant at The Art Students League. She arranged hundreds of still lifes and portrait settings for the many artists who studied painting in the League's studios. Her wonderful use of shape, color and space is remnicent of the impressionists, but Mildred is unique to herself. Treat yourself to a copy of this book.
