Forty years after it helped usher Milwaukee into the age of modern expressways, the old Marquette Interchange will be mostly, if not totally gone. The new project is aimed at delivering a safer and more useable interchange.
This book chronicles the activities adjacent to the interchange, along the I-43 leg from Wells Street to North Avenue, with Walsh Construction as the general contractor. This portion began in October 2005 and wrapped up in December 2006. It covers the longest stretch of the project.
My photography began in April of 2006 with the demolition of the Milwaukee County Courthouse Parking Annex that was built over the northbound lanes of I-43. On the north façade was a four story (76 feet long and 37 feet high) mural titled "Whale Commuters." The mural was donated by artist Robert Wyland in 1997, but it was destroyed with the demolition. The last section of the annex came down after a permit was obtained from the Federal Government to proceed in spite of some nesting seagulls and their eggs.
