A man goes to India to take photographs at the turn of the century.

Years later, as an old man, he receives an invitation to the Lord Mayor's Banquet, in an envelope bearing the stamp of the Remembrancer of the City of London.

What does such a man think as he sits down to eat with the great and the good? What use are his recollections to him now? How has the past changed, and what is his place in it?

The Remembrancer is based on a cache of photographs found in a skip by Richard Asplen. Along with them was the invitation.

In a way, this is a true story.
