Que es Peru? Of course, there is no definitive response. It is a country inhabited by many varied peoples of Mestisos and Indios origins, and descendants of Europeans, Asians, and Africans. One cannot stereotype this or any location on our planet Earth. We can visit, witness, and explore! For us, the contact is made with our “being” and photography is the conduit. To connect with our presence and openness is the key to revelatory experiences and insightful photographs.
Que es Peru? For some the ingredients are in the cities or villages, deserts or beaches. For others, it’s the Inca ruins or mist filled valleys. Or is it the depths of the Amazon that excites and delights our imaginations? Peru is many peoples in a diverse culture with a strong sense of tradition and spirituality woven into its intricate fibers.
Fourteen photographers began a journey at the end of 2007, to discover what Peru would be for us. The following selected photographs reflect our unique perspectives of Peru. They suggest a tale, a glimpse at a fraction of a second of that encounter. All of us traveled together and ate together. We rode on the same buses and trains and looked upon the same places; we did not, however, see the same things. These photographs are what each individual recorded. It is our “connect”.
This is, for us, what Peru was.
