About the Book
The student projects in this book propose civic programmes for the migrant worker population of the Tianhe Cun village in Guangzhou, China. These dense pockets of crooked allies filled with street life are frequent enclaves in a sea of faceless speculative mass city. They form the precarious habitat of the migrant worker.
Migrant workers are characterized by their hukou, a registration system in China that defines residents as either rural or urban. It is this system that fabricates the need for migrants to apply for work and then exclude them from urban privileges such as health and education.
In their projects student from dip 9 at the University of East London speculate on architectural interventions that protect and consolidate these habitats. They provide the migrant workers with civic facilities that aids them general and particular education and training, on basic living knowledge, custom and city regulation. It thus helps migrant workers to establish their place in Guangzhou’s city life.
