A Journey: Egypt & Morocco

Category: Fine Art Photography

These images of Egypt and Morocco were made during a ten-month trip through Europe and North Africa in 1977-78. For this, our first trip out of the Americas, we traveled in an ancient Volkswagen van that a previous owner had fitted out as a camper.

Morocco, which we reached by ferry from Spain, was the first North African country we came to, and our introduction to the Arab world. With the exception of the city of Fez, we went only to small towns rarely frequented by tourists. Time after time we experienced the pleased surprise of locals to find foreigners among them.

For the trip to Egypt we left the van in Athens and flew the short hop across the Mediterranean. We relied on public transportation between towns, aside from our most remarkable adventure, a week sailing the Nile from Aswan to Luxor on a felucca. Many of the most impressive ruins are situated along the river and to approach them from the water was amazing. We slept under the stars, berthed along the shore.
